How DJ Tom Karaoke Works
🎉 Setting Up the Best Party
⭐ Best Setup: A computer connected to a TV running this site, with sound coming out of a party speaker that has wireless mics paired to it.
👍 Good Setup: TV speakers turned up to match the volume of a party speaker with mics. The sound and music will blend from both.
🎤 Just Wing It: No speaker or mics? No problem — turn it up loud and have fun the best you can!
🌐 Remote Singers: If singers are joining from different locations, headphones with a built-in mic work best.
⚠️ Feedback Warning: If you hear a high-pitched squeal, it's audio feedback. This happens when a mic picks up sound coming from a speaker nearby. Move the mic away from the speaker, turn the speaker volume down slightly, or mute the mic when not singing. Remote singers should always use headphones to prevent feedback.
📱 How It Works — The Host
Create a party and share your 6-digit code with friends
Friends join from their phones at the-dj-tom.com/party.html
The TV screen on your device shows whoever is currently singing
Use Skip Singer to advance the queue manually
Use My Songs to add songs for your own turns
The queue auto-advances when a YouTube video finishes
🎤 How It Works — Each Singer
Join using the party code on your own phone or device
Search for songs and add them to your personal queue
When it's your turn, your screen flashes and a countdown starts
You have 20 seconds to tap Start, Move Down, or Skip
If you don't respond in 20 seconds, you're automatically skipped (you stay in the queue)
You can add more songs anytime — they queue behind your current songs
Leave the party to remove yourself from the queue entirely
📺 Casting to a TV
Chrome on PC/Mac + Chromecast: Click the pop-out button (⛶) on the TV, then click the cast icon in Chrome's address bar area, or go to ⋮ menu → Cast
PC/Mac + HDMI: Plug HDMI into your computer and TV, then extend/mirror your display. Pop out the TV screen and drag it to the TV
iPhone/iPad → Apple TV: Swipe down from top-right for Control Center → Screen Mirroring → select your Apple TV
Android → Chromecast: Pull down notification shade → Cast icon, or use Google Home app
Smart TV browser: Open the-dj-tom.com/party.html directly on your Smart TV browser and run the party from there!
💬 Remote Parties & Video Chat
For video with remote singers, we recommend running a separate video call:
FaceTime, Zoom, Discord, or Google Meet work great alongside this app
Everyone should mute themselves while another person is singing — out of respect and to avoid feedback
The person singing can unmute briefly to sing along with the karaoke track
Use the in-app chat for quick messages while others are singing

Party not found? Double-check the code — it's 6 digits with a dash (e.g. 847-293)
Video not playing? That video may not allow embedding — try another result
Song not showing? Wait a moment — the queue syncs every 5 seconds
Party expiring? The host can extend time anytime from their controls
